What the law says

Under the Right to Information Act, 2005, you can ask any public authority for information; they must reply within 30 days (48 hours if life or liberty is involved). First appeal is within 30 days to the appellate officer, and second appeal within 90 days to the Information Commission. Since 13 November 2025, personal information about others is exempt from disclosure. Grievances against central offices can be filed on CPGRAMS; most states have Right to Public Services laws that fix time limits for certificates and services and allow appeals. Disability rights and certificates are under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (UDID).
