Make my own list — free, 2 minutesYour situation
- What reason have you been given? Suspicious or disputed transaction
Do these now
- Your written request to the bank asking for the reason
Without a written reason, it is hard to know whether to approach the bank, the police or a court. Where: Write to your branch or the bank's grievance email. Ask: the reason, the authority that asked for the freeze, its reference number, and the amount held.
Papers to gather
- Account statement from about 6 months before the freeze to today
Your advocate can see the credits that may be linked and the balance that is held. Where: Net banking (download PDF) or request at the branch. - All messages and letters with the bank about the freeze
Creates a timeline and shows whether the bank responded properly. Where: Email, SMS, branch letters, app chat. - Proof that you own the account (passbook, account opening papers, ID)
Basic identification for any application. Where: Your records or the branch.
You may also need, depending on your answers
- The freeze message or notice — It usually names the authority or reason. This decides who can lift the freeze.
- Details of the specific incoming payments (date, amount, UTR/reference, sender) — Freezes linked to cyber complaints usually point to particular credits.
- Proof of the deal behind those payments — Invoices, chats with the buyer, or a trading platform order record can show why the money came to you.
- Police notice, FIR number or cyber-complaint reference — Your advocate needs the case details to approach the police or the court.
- Bank complaint reference number and replies — Usually needed before going to the RBI complaint system.
- Proof that you depend on the account (salary slips, business invoices, medical bills) — Can support a request to release part of the money.
What the law says
Freezes ordered by police, courts or tax authorities follow different procedures. Your advocate will check which authority acted and under what power.
