What the law says

Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023: voluntarily causing hurt (Section 115), grievous hurt (Section 117), criminal intimidation (Section 351) and extortion (Section 308). Serious offences are cognisable and police must register an FIR (Section 173 BNSS, including Zero FIR and e-FIR). For minor (non-cognisable) offences police record it and you may need a magistrate’s order to investigate. A medico-legal certificate (MLC) from the hospital is key evidence.
