- Is anyone objecting? A family member
Where you stand
- In your favour Mutation does not decide ownership — a wrong entry does not by itself take away your title.
- Be careful With an objection, the revenue officer may send the matter to a civil court to decide title.

Mutation follows the title document. Where: Your records; certified copy from the Sub-Registrar. - Current record extract (7/12, khatauni, jamabandi, patta, khata or property tax record)

You may also need, depending on your answers
- Death certificate and legal heir certificate / succession papers — Needed for inheritance mutation.
- No-objection or consent from other heirs (if any) — Avoids objections and delay.
- Older records and maps (previous mutations, survey map, partition records) — Proves the record is wrong.
- Your mutation application, acknowledgement and any rejection order — Needed for appeal or follow-up.
- File an RTI for the status and file notings of your application — Often moves a stuck file.
What the law says
Land and property records are kept by the state revenue department (rural) or the municipal body (urban) under state land revenue laws. Mutation is ordered by the Tehsildar / Revenue Officer after notice to everyone affected; appeals lie to higher revenue officers. Courts have repeatedly held that mutation entries do not create or end ownership — title depends on documents such as a sale deed, will, partition or inheritance. Many states now give a time limit for mutation and let you apply and track online.
