- Block the SIM with your operator and get a replacement — Stops OTP misuse.
- Block UPI, cards and net banking — Prevents fraud.
- Block the phone on CEIR (Sanchar Saathi) — Makes it useless to thieves and helps trace it.
- List of documents lost with their numbers — Duplicates are faster with numbers.
What the law says
Theft is an offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; most state police let you file an e-FIR for theft or a lost-article report online. The Department of Telecommunications’ CEIR system (on Sanchar Saathi) blocks a phone on all networks by IMEI and helps trace it, using your police report number. Duplicate documents are issued by the department that issued them, usually against the police report.
